Mental Health Matters
With over 100 members, the Jamaica Mental Health Advocacy Network (JAMHAN) is a robust organisation that supports, offers resources and advocates for Jamaicans battling mental illnesses to improve lives nationwide. JAMHAN was established in May 2012 and consists of a range of experts, practitioners and advocates in Mental Health, Social Work, Community Development and Advocacy.
Demystifying mental health
issues and promoting
available services to combat
them.
Providing access to help for the full spectrum of mental illnesses and aiding in the prevention of these issues.
Championing the adoption of effective mental health policies, initiatives, and services for all Jamaicans.
Shortly after graduating from my Fulbright-scholarship supported Masters training in Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counselling in South Florida, I was determined to build a community in Jamaica. I envisioned a community of like-minded friends and colleagues who shared my passion about building awareness about the importance of being mentally healthy, and who were keen to see greater improvement in the treatment, care and support for the mentally ill in Jamaica. Recognising the high levels of stigma and the lack of information about mental health and mental illness in the public space we knew we needed a strong and united voice. JAMHAN was established to connect us, to foster this network. I am proud of the impact we have made over the past 10 years and am confident that the organisation will continue making strides for #mentalhealthmatters.

We aim to provide quality care and are dedicated to assisting people to lead satisfying lives by enhancing their mental health. We believe that stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness often arise from ignorance, misinformation, and the appearance of a lack of commonality. This discourages others from seeking help. Through advocacy, education and research, JAMHAN seeks to chip away at stereotypes and establish a new norm that fosters openness and transparency in Jamaica.
Compassionate leaders using their expertise to support the mental health journey of countless Jamaicans.
JAMHAN helps to identify the services those with mental health conditions need and match them with appropriate caregivers for equitable access to care for all.
